WHAT’S THE #1 PROBLEM STUDENTS HAVE STUDYING FROM TEXTBOOKS?

For the past 80 years, research shows that the #1 problem students have studying and learning from textbooks is separating what’s important from what’s not important in the text material. Even the most intelligent students taking Advanced Placement courses struggle with this challenge. As a result, they take too many notes and get frustrated because they can’t ‘see the trees through the forest’ when they are done studying. That’s why SQ3R was developed in 1942 at Ohio State. SQ3R provides proven study techniques that solve this critical problem. In most textbooks, 40-60% of the information is ‘filler’ and is used to connect important information into cohesive and easy-to-read paragraphs. To get good grades, students need to know how to separate the ‘filler’ from the real ‘meat and potatoes’ and arrange the important information into well-structured bulleted outlines so they can clearly see and comprehend it. This is a literacy skill that needs to be taught and practiced. When students master this skill their confidence level accelerates, they become academically motivated, their self-esteem rises and grades skyrocket.
