THE BEST STUDY SKILLS STRATEGY IS NOW EVEN BETTER

SQ3R, is a research-based reading comprehension strategy named for its 5 steps: Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review. The method was developed at Ohio State University for the government in 1942 by Francis Robinson, an American Educational Psychologist who was in charge of the Study Skills Department. It’s considered the most effective learning method ever developed. He published this proven strategy in 1946 in a book entitled Effective Study which is considered the ‘Father of all How-to-Study Programs’ by experts in the field.

Originally, SQ3R was developed to accelerate the learning curve for 150,000 ‘student soldiers’ accepted into the Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP). ASTP was a 25-week advanced strategic and technical training program rolled out at 235 colleges and universities across the nation designed to quickly develop the military leaders we needed to spearhead the war effort in Asia and Europe. Some historians attribute SQ3R study skills, in part, to helping win WWII. However, over the years SQ3R has proven to be very effective for younger students as well because it’s a more logical and efficient approach to reading, studying and learning new material. It’s the only Study Skills method recommended by CollegeBoard.com and most of the Top 100 Colleges in the nation. That is why secondary classrooms all over the world have begun using SQ3R to improve reading comprehension skills which have plummeted during the last couple years due to the pandemic. In fact, 70% of 4th and 8th graders across the country are ‘NOT PROFICIENT’ in Reading Comprehension.

However, the best Study Skills strategy ever developed has become even better. During the last two decades we have revised and updated SQ3R into a more robust version we call SQ4R. The six steps are: Scope, Question, Read, Record, Recite, Reinforce. We’ve added computer note-taking technology and ‘whole brain’ memory techniques to bring SQ3R up into the 21st century. Neither of those technologies existed 80 years ago and that is why we call our new and more powerful strategy 21st Century Study Skills, or SQ4R.
