BOOST ACADEMIC SUCCESS BY TRAINING UPPERCLASSMEN TO MENTOR UNDERCLASSMEN

We are currently providing proprietary study skills training to upperclassmen in a very large school district with multiple high schools as part of a Student Pride Mentoring Program. It’s a brilliant concept and unique “Train-the-Student Trainer Program” that delivers huge benefits to the district. We are teaching select junior and senior scholars how to use 21^st Century Study Skills, based on SQ3R, and how to mentor struggling freshman and sophomores to use it to boost their performance and achieve full academic potential. The upperclassmen receive Community Credits as compensation for mentoring the underclassman, plus they get to master invaluable study skills and techniques, which raises their academic performance forever, builds confidence and gets them “READY FOR COLLEGE”. The underclassmen, especially those having difficulty, get rescued by upperclassmen and they really enjoy learning from them. The program is a win-win for everyone and delivers greater Return-On-Investment for the school district because it’s self-sustaining. It’s an excellent use of ESSA funds because it strengthens the core program in schools and provides academic and support services to low-achieving students. It also provides evidence-based training that enables participating students to achieve the learning standards of the curriculum and elevates the quality of instruction by providing staff with substantial opportunities for professional development. The training will increase student achievement, improve the quality and effectiveness of teaching and learning, and provide low-income and minority students greater access to effective teaching and learning skills based on rock-solid research.
