EFFECTIVE CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT SKILLS

Last week, USA TODAY published an article entitled, Behavior vs. Books: US students are rowdier than ever post-COVID. How is a teacher to teach?

The article states the solution, according to many psychologists, is to provide better training for teachers on how to address misbehavior and to emphasize social and emotional learning among students. Although I agree with these two recommendations the best solution needs to be much broader in scope. In 30 years of high school science teaching to more than 4,000 students I never met a student that did not want to be academically successful. I’m sure the same psychologists would agree the best way to change behavior is to change attitude first. Attitude governs behavior.

When students are taught how to study effectively and get good grades they develop more confidence, greater self-esteem and become more academically motivated. They can see ‘the light at the end of the tunnel’ and know that good tests scores translate into better course grades, higher GPAs, and more career opportunities. They get motivated. They do not want to fail. If you do not teach them how to study effectively and they constantly fail high-stakes tests they will go into a downward spiral because they do not know how to reverse the curve. That’s when you have serious behavior and emotional problems. This is a key point because the average high school student takes about 300 important tests during grades 9-12 and nothing is more stressful.
